Cannon Falls is an extremely environmentally conscious community. The Cannon Valley Trail is a scenic 20-mile trail running along the Cannon River from Red Wing MN to Cannon Falls MN that is fully paved. Also check out Lake Byllesby Reservoir which is a 1,432-acre lake created from the Cannon River for boating, swimming and all your water activities. Located along the shores of the Lake Byllesby Reservoir is Lake Byllesby Campground, the perfect place to go camping! Do you have the passion to "chasing a white ball around perfectly mowed grass?", then the numerous golf courses like Cannon Golf Club or The Summit Golf Club are places you should visit. In the beginning July, be sure to come to town for the Cannon Valley Fair which has a parade, grandstand entertainment, livestock and all the fair food you can handle. The 109th year of the Cannon Valley Fair will be in 2024!

Cannon Falls Area Schools provide educational services, resources, and facilities to the residents of Cannon Falls. The district is made up of three schools, and provides a low teacher-student ratio, making for more individualized attention, and smaller class sizes. District 252 is ranked in the top districts in the state, with 80% of graduates moving on to higher educational institutions. The district also provides continuing educational programming including computer literacy and career preparation classes.

Transportation

Hiawathaland Transit provides public transportation services to the city of Cannon Falls and the surrounding area. The area also has a Volunteer Transit program (HART) through which residents provide rides to those unable to utilize the regular buses using their personal vehicles.

Local Government

Cannon Falls is governed locally by the seven-member City Council. The members of the council include the Mayor and six at-large council members. This group is responsible for creating and administering all city policies and ordinances.

City History

First settled in 1854, Cannon Falls began as a small community nestled along the banks of the Cannon River. With the addition of the Chicago Great Western Railroad in 1855, the settlement grew into a popular stop along the route. The community was incorporated into the Village of Cannon Falls in 1874, allowing for more organized government and better infrastructure. In 1905, Cannon Falls officially adopted its city charter, cementing its status. This charming river town has expanded and modernized over the years, while maintaining it’s small town, historic charm. Today, Cannon Falls is the thriving community of just over 4,200 residents. Then for you Civil War History enthusiasts, William J. Colvill Jr. who led the 1st Minnesota Volunteer Infantry in the Battle of Gettysbury is buried in the Cannon Falls Community Cemetery underneath a statue of him similar to the one that can be found in the rotunda of the MN State Capital.
